    The North of England is a special place with a rich cultural history set in a varied landscape. It is bursting with wonderful places to visit and enjoy, from iconic cities to magnificent countryside and coast. It has incredible stories to tell and amazing people to meet. Exploring it is a delight but sadly, only certain parts are well known, even around the rest of the UK. Internationally, it has to be regarded as undersold although certain headline attractions like the city of York and some of its famous heritage properties are genuinely world-famous. There is a new energy about the North, captured in WhitbyGovernment initiatives to bring new economic strength and freedom through the Northern Powerhouse Strategy and other structural and organisational moves, including an integrated transport framework and plans for rail and road investment. Despite the lack of an overall regional tourism strategy, plenty of great things have been happening amongst the 30+ local destination management bodies, and individual local authorities and enterprise partnerships.
