Facilitated by Jane Jackson, experienced Nurse Consultant, Author and Presenter in Pre Assessment. The Mid-Staffordshire Report - Francis Report was published February 2013[i]The report detailed how, through a series of actions and inactions, patient care came to suffer. The report demonstrates how the focus of leadership and management had become disengaged, focussing on national and financial targets rather than on provision of quality patient care. This masterclass will encourage the participants to challenge their current service of care to ensure a patient led service, provided by team who are appropriately trained and performance measured against agreed policies. If healthcare is to maintain pace with the advances in treatment, then the process we put in place to support the patient needs to be efficient and effective. The population is increasing in terms of numbers so the demand of healthcare services is considerable and also diverse due to the ease of transportation across the globe. As a population, we are living longer, but we have increasing co-morbidities. The role in preoperative assesment is to be aware of the comorbidities, to identify the current status and where possible, put into place a plan for optimisation prior to admission for elective surgery. If the team preparing a patient for surgery are to be effective in their job, then appropriate training is required. Following training competencies should be assessed and acknowledged, with regular re-check on competencies to ensure practice is maintained at the highest level. more
