The title for this years' conference is 'Member's Choice,' and it is not too late to make a request for inclusion of a particular topic, or to volunteer to present something you feel is of special interest to delegates. For further information, to suggest a topic or to volunteer to present at this event, please contact Graham Furnace by e-mail (oguk.dr.enquiries@rsoh.co.uk). Topics to be covered at the 2013 conference will include: * An evidence review of the safety of anticoagulants offshore * The outcome of a review of the medications and equipment available on offshore installations * An update on progress of the body morphology study * News from the rapidly-expanding renewables sector in the UK North Sea. We have listened to feedback from previous events regarding the timing and location of this conference and as a result, this year it will take place in June and in London (not Aberdeen). We do hope that this will make travel arrangements easier for some attendees, and allow those who wish to combine the conference with a personal visit to the UK to better do so. There will also be an evening reception on Wednesday 5 June 2013 which will give delegates the chance to network with other examining doctors attending the conference. This will take place at the museum within The Royal College of Surgeons of England. more

Expert collaboration: Breaking language barriers and leading the way in COSHH management across the oil and gas industry 6 June 2013 Subsea 7, Aberdeen Industry leaders in their own fields, Alcumus Group, a specialist in compliance and certification services, and Subsea 7, a global leader in seabed-to-surface engineering and construction, are working together to share best practice with colleagues in the oil and gas industry. Equally passionate about the importance of rigorous and robust health and safety measures, the companies have been working together to implement the Sypol COSHH Management System (CMS) successfully across the international, multi-lingual territories that Subsea 7 works within. On Thursday 6th June senior representatives from the two companies are jointly hosting a morning and afternoon seminar to share with industry colleagues the secrets of this substantial project including; how the project was conceptualised and implemented, how language barriers have been overcome and a new system developed to deal with multi-languages and how Sypol CMS has contributed to Subsea 7’s robust COSHH management. The seminar will take place in Aberdeen at the Subsea 7 offices, and will provide an insight into how this vast COSHH management project has been completed, as well as a discussion on what the future holds, including an e-learning facility. We are also holding a webinar on Managing Occupational Hygiene in the Oil & Gas sector, taking place on 25th April – this one hour webinar will provide delegates with insight into how occupational hygiene is managed in the oil and gas sector, using real life case studies. The Ideas Olympiad: Art Theft and the Case of the Two Stolen Turners The Ideas Olympiad is a free series of events, brought to you by the London Borough of Newham, which will bring high profile and interesting speakers to the borough from 28 May - 27 June, to talk to residents about their ideas and vision. Art Theft and the Case of the Two Stolen Turners Thursday 6 June Stratford Circus - Circus 2, Theatre Square, Stratford, London E15 1BX Doors open: 6:30pm Event starts: 7pm Book signing: 8pm Event ends: 8:30pm Sandy Nairne - Director of the National Portrait Gallery, London (previously Director of Programmes at Tate). In 1994 two important Turner paintings (then valued £24million) were stolen from a German public gallery while on loan from the Tate Collection in London. Sandy Nairne (then Director of Programmes at the Tate) became centrally involved in the pursuit of the pictures, and the negotiation for their return. In his talk, Sandy will talk about this complex cloak-and-dagger story, which finally concluded with the Turners going back on public display in 2003. The theft of high-profile works of art is not new, and recurs on a fairly regular basis: 2011 marks the centenary of the theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre, Paris and fifty years since the theft of Goya’s Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery, London. Sandy will also discuss other high-value art thefts, trying to resolve the puzzle of why thieves steal well-known works of art which cannot be sold, even on the black market. He will focus on the theft and recovery of works of art, while acknowledging that they form part of a much broader field of theft, looting and illicit dealings with art and antiquities around the world. Sandy Nairne will be signing copies of his book ‘Art Theft: And the Case of the Stolen Turners’. Please note that registration for this event will begin at 6:30pm. This Master Class will demonstrate the audit cycle step by step. The aim is to provide nurses with the confidence and key skills to enable them to conduct audits independently and effectively. The Master Class will be interactive from the outset and participants are strongly encouraged to come with an idea of what they would like to audit, in order to achieve results from the day. This is not an ordinary ‘study day’ – it is a Master Class with 1:1 advice time incorporated into the day for those who would like individual consultation to address specific audit issues. If you have ever thought audit was boring you will be inspired to think differently after this day. The Master Class will only assume a basic knowledge of the audit cycle itself and pre-reading material will be provided by email for this purpose. The day will appeal to nurses who would like to: 1. Understand the Audit Process with top tips to make audit easy! 2. Write a standard relevant to the audit you want to do 3. Be able to design ‘bespoke audit forms’ 4. Analyse and Interpret data effectively for presentation (not statistics) 5. Formulate an audit report 6. Construct recommendations for practice A guide to audit will be provided and core materials to ensure that nurses have easy reference materials, which support them back in practice. more
