Event organisers called on for Commonwealth Games celebration

EventScotland has launched a fund with the aim of encouraging groups to stage celebrations in the run up to the country hosting the Commonwealth Games.

EventScotland has launched a fund with the aim of encouraging groups to stage celebrations in the run up to the country hosting the Commonwealth Games.

The group wants event organisers to host a range of exciting activities this autumn to coincide with the official handover of the Games flag on October 14th, with the aiming of promoting pride in Scotland's staging of the major competition.

Paul Bush, chief operating officer at EventScotland, said that the fund would be used to inspire communities to engage in the country's sporting culture and heritage in 2010 and beyond.

"As part of our legacy plans we have made clear that we want all of Scotland to capitalise on this opportunity to host the biggest multi-sport event in our history," added Shona Robison, minister for public health and sport.

Earlier this year, EventScotland announced £7,000 of funding for a marketing campaign to attract visitors to the country's Festival of History at Lanark Racecourse.
