Eventia has become the first events association to launch the Green Global Index (GGI) to its members, aimed at enhancing sustainability efforts within the industry.

The GGI uses an online questionnaire and a data entry process to rank businesses nationally and globally in terms of their environmental efforts.

Organisations which gain a minimum level of attainment are placed on a public index, advertising them to consumer and corporate buyers as a sustainable supplier.

"This is a great opportunity for Eventia members to benchmark their corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity against peers and identify areas for future improvement," said Aileen Reuter, a board member for CSR at the organisation and marketing director of Grass Roots.

According to the group, GGI is suitable for all affiliates, from venues to event agencies, and is designed to support a sustainable industry by providing a "simple and low-cost process for all users irrespective of their size".

Recently, Matt Wilson, events director for the Conference People, said that the demand for green venues currently outweighs their availability in the UK.
