Ricoh Arena boss Daniel Gidney believes the venue is helping to lead Coventry out of recession by attracting event organisers in niche areas.

He was commenting after accepting the accolade for best conference venue on behalf of the arena at the Godiva Awards held at the Warwick Arts Centre.

"We feel we have raised the bar in the standard of conference facilities in the city over the last four years and I am confident we are going to help lead Coventry out of the recession," the chief executive said.

He also congratulated staff for their contribution to the arena's success, saying it could not have been achieved without their hard work.

Mr Gidney explained that while the economic climate has proved challenging, the venue has continued to attract "a host of niche and blue-chip clients".

Last week, the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre (QEIICC) announced resilient financial results for the first six months of 2009, with the chief executive describing trading as "very buoyant".
